Developmental Editing

This is usually the first stage of editing for a new manuscript. Developmental editing attends to the big picture elements of a story: plot, structure, pacing, character development, continuity, logic, world building, etc. Each developmental edit includes in-line comments and a comprehensive editorial letter that offers you a road map to getting started on your edits

Line Editing

Also known as stylistic editing, this is the second stage of editing. This service attends to the flow and craft of the writing. Line editing ensures your manuscript reads as smoothly as possible and includes line-level reorganization, improvements to syntax, sentence structure, and corrections to mechanical errors. This service includes in-line changes at the sentence level.

Copy Editing

After developmental and line editing, it's time to clean up any outstanding mechanical issues in the manuscript. Copy editing attends to grammar, punctuation, consistency, spelling, and word usage. I use the Chicago Manual of Style and provide a comprehensive style sheet tailored to your indidividual project.

Manuscript Evaluation

Not ready to commit to a developmental edit? You can instead opt for a manuscript evaluation: a comprehensive edit letter that offers a road map to getting started on your edits. Manuscript evaluations are typically 10-15 pages long. This service does not include in-line edits on the manuscript.

Proofreading

This is the final stage of editing. A proofreader's job is to catch those pesky typos our brains love to gloss over. A proofread ensures that any lingering mechanical errors are stamped out. Please note that if I copy edit your work, I am not the best choice for proofreading.

Terms of Service

  • When you contact me about a project, please let me know what dates you are hoping to pencil in for editing, and I will do my best to accommodate.
  • Different edits require different lengths of time, but you can expect a 4-6 week turnaround on most novel-length projects (60,000-100,000 words). I will provide a more specific timeline once I have more details about your manuscript and the type of editorial service you're looking for.
  • I am happy to change dates with 4 weeks notice, however, rescheduling with less than 4 weeks notice will incur a $200 rescheduling fee.
  • Minor scheduling shifts (up to one week) will be accommodated without additional fees.
  • All invoices are sent via Stripe.
  • 25% of the total invoice is due upon project acceptance. This is to reserve your spot.
  • 25% is due when I receive your manuscript, and the remaining 50% is due upon project completion. Please note that the invoice must be paid in full before I deliver the final files.
  • Payments are non-refundable. However, any payments already made on canceled projects can be put towards future projects if scheduled within one year.
  • Quotes are valid for three months. After three months, please request a new quote for your project.
  • Please not that I will not edit AI-generated content. If I suspect AI was used in the generation of material, I reserve the right to cancel the project. My job was catching students who use AI to write their university assignments; I will know.
